This is one of the three original "RING" type USM ULTRASONIC lenses that literally changed the entire world of auto-focus technology and launched Canon to the top position in the photography industry. It is light and compact but does not sacrifice any optical or mechanical performance. This one features the heavy duty STAINLESS STEEL METAL LENS MOUNT, which is getting much harder to find these days. This lens was discontinued in 1997 and it has become very difficult to get your hands on one. This rare, highly sought-after model incorporates “FTM†Full Time Manual focusing with the internal "Rear Focus" design. The superior “Ring Type" USM motor and a real distance scale window (complete with infrared compensation markings) are featured. It is threaded for the very common and affordable 58mm filters and accessories. “Full-Time Manual†focus allows you to make fine focus adjustments WHILE THE AUTO FOCUS SYSTEM IS ENGAGED! This is especially useful for setting the exact focus point in a close shot. It will allow you to emphasize a particular picture element while other parts of the image are intentionally blurred by a narrow depth-of-field. This lens has the Top-of-the-Line “Ring†type USM Ultrasonic AF design. There are 14 lens elements in 12 groups. There is one ASPHERICAL element for distortion correction. Focusing is performed internally, the front lens does not rotate, making it much easier to use polarizing and special effects filters. These features insure that focusing will be lightning fast, impeccably precise and dead silent! Most of these special features are reserved for the expensive "L" series PROFESSIONAL LENSES. This lens is in EXCELLENT cosmetic condition. It functions flawlessly in every respect. Autofocus is very, very fast, nearly silent and extremely accurate. The LARGE zoom ring works as smooth as silk and is very quick (all the way from 35mm to 135mm is less than a quarter of a turn!). The manual focus ring functions as smoothly as I have ever seen (and these lenses have an excellent reputation for super smooth operation).There is absolutely no sloppiness or looseness in this lens, IT IS AS SOLID AS A ROCK! This lens has NO ZOOM CREEP! Take a look at the pictures, this zoom "stays put" at all zoom settings! It does not drift at all! Zoom drift is very common with this model. This one is nice and tight with absolutely no sign of drifting. The barrel, focusing ring, zoom ring, AF switch and hand grip surfaces are all in fantastic shape, with almost no indications of use at all. This is very, very close to MINT. There is a very slight scratch on the barrel, just above the word "ULTRASONIC" to the right of the Distance Window. There are no other noticeable flaws, cracks or dings at all. There are some very faint "rub marks" that are barely detectable, but only with an extremely close inspection with a bright light and a magnifying lens. The 58mm filter threads are perfect. All the lettering and numbers on the barrel and in the distance window are flawless, clean and bright. The front element is perfectly clean and clear with no scratches, fog or haze and has always been protected by a filter, which is included. The rear glass is also perfect and clear, with no scratches or visible flaws what-so-ever. There is absolutely no fungus and very little visible dust inside. It is extremely difficult to find this particular model in such nice cosmetic, mechanical and optical condition! Image quality dramatically outperforms all of the popular “standard kit†zooms, and is at least equal to the much more expensive EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM! Sharpness and contrast are quite impressive throughout the entire zoom range. It's very good wide-open, but the image sharpness gets really sharp at around f/8 or so. In spite of the impressively wide zoom ratio, only slight distortions are visible, and then, only at the wide-end. This is partly due to the very special ASPHERICAL ELEMENT, which provides extremely effective correction. Flare is also very well controlled, as you can verify by looking at the sunset photos that I shot with it. Pictures produced through this lens are extremely sharp, “contrasty†and very rich in color saturation. If you are still using the cheap plastic “kit†lens that came with your EOS camera, YOU REALLY SHOULD UPGRADE TO THIS LENS. The super large zoom ring is very comfortable to use and quickly goes from 35mm all the way out to 135mm in less than a quarter of a turn. The barrel extends for zooming, but the front lens element does not rotate at all. The position of the zoom ring relative to the focus ring makes this lens almost as easy to use as a "One Touch" lens in manual focus mode. In Auto Focus mode, it is just a pleasure to handle. Even large "gorilla fisted" photographers will have no problem using this zoom! The manual focus ring is nice and tight, yet it turns smoothly. The entire focus range, from macro to infinity, is also covered in less than a quarter turn of rotation! Note that when it is used on a Canon Digital SLR, like the Rebel XTi, 40D, 30D, 20D or 10D, this delivers the equivalent "Field Of View" of a 55-215mm zoom lens. That's due to the 1.6 X "crop factor" magnification. This is a great focal range for portraits, nature landscapes and sports photography. This model is very compact in size (about 3.75†to 5.5†at full zoom) and light-weight (15 oz). The wide angle to medium telephoto range make this an ideal “travel†lens. You will find that it will stay on your camera almost all of the time. It’s great for everything from interior shots, to portraits, architecture, landscapes and nature photography. It covers about 90% of all normal photographic needs. I took some autumn photos last fall. I really liked this simple scene, with the park bench surrounded by fall's vivid colors. I photographed this setting with three different GREAT lenses, and I shot at least 100 frames. This lens gave me some completely different perspectives and several great images. As usual, THIS SERIOUSLY UNDERESTIMATED LENS CAPTURED MY FAVORITE PICTURE OF THE ENTIRE SET! It happens so often that I should not be surprised at all!Last summer my wife and I were were hiking through Watkins Glen, NY. Some of the very best shots from our trip were captured by my wife using this model lens, mounted on an old Canon EOS D-30 Digital SLR. Please note that her camera has a tiny 3.3 megapixel image sensor, with one third of the pixel depth of new Canon Digital SLRs. However, you can see that these pictures still have very impressive resolution, which I am sure is directly attributable to the excellent sharpness of this lens. I have also included a striking shot of hot air balloons from the Montoursville Hot Air Balloon Festival. Both sunset pictures were taken in the early spring, using this same model lens on an EOS 10D, and they all turned out great. Notice the total lack of flare in the first sunset photo. This was shot DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN! This lens does a fantastic job of capturing the "feel" of the moment. This lens is still in the original retail box, with ALL OF THE ORIGINAL FACTORY PACKING MATERIALS! The blank "serial numbered" warranty card and original Canon instruction manual are still in the box with the lens. A very nice 58mm "Haze" / UV Protective Filter has always been on this lens and it is Included!
