This very RARE lens is widely considered to be the best "Mid-Grade" lens ever built in this focal range. It was discounted just before the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L professional lens was introduced. In many reviews, this model has proven to be surprisingly close to the "L" lens in optical performance. The professional lens is a superior model with weather seals and practically indestructible construction. However, if you don't have the extra $700.00 to shell out for the professional telephoto lens, this might be your very BEST choice. Some professional photographers actually prefer using this light and compact little gem, regardless of cost.It is AS FAST (actually a bit faster at the short end), NEARLY AS SHARP throughout the focal range and has the same top-of-the-line Ring USM Auto-Focus Drive, Eight-Blade Aperture and Distance Scale Window as the professional model. Unlike the "L" lens, this one CAN be used with your camera's built-in flash and you also get an extra 10mm of focal length on the long end. It is threaded for the very common and affordable 58mm filters and accessories. It has the superior heavy duty STAINLESS STEEL METAL LENS MOUNT, just like the pro lens.This is the highly sought-after model with “FTM†Full Time Manual focusing, super fast “Ring†type USM motor, a real distance scale window and the heavy duty stainless steel metal lens mount. This was one of the original trio of USM lenses, along with the EF 35-135mm 4-5.6 USM and the EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM zooms. Discontinued in the late nineties, there is no equivalent mid-grade Canon lens available today, and probably never again because It would undoubtedly take away potential sales of the expensive "L" model.“Full-Time Manual†focus allows you to make fine focus adjustments WHILE THE AUTO FOCUS SYSTEM IS ENGAGED! This is especially useful for setting the exact focus point in a close-up shot. It will allow you to emphasize a particular picture element while other parts of the image are intentionally blurred by a narrow depth-of-field. This lens has the Top-of-the-Line “Ring†type USM Ultrasonic AF design. There are 14 lens elements arranged in 10 groups. Focusing is performed internally, the front of the lens does not rotate at all, making it much easier to use a circular polarizing filter and special effects filters. These features insure that focusing will be lightning fast, impeccably precise and dead silent! With eight aperture blades, not just five, six or seven, it will give you incredible out-of-focus backgrounds. This effect is known as “bokah†and it creates perfectly rounded “circles-of-confusionâ€. It will make your close-ups and portraits look almost three dimensional, with the subject very distinctly separated from the enhanced background. This lens is in beautiful cosmetic condition and it functions perfectly. The eight aperture blades are "snappy" and oil free. Autofocus is very, very fast, whisper quiet and extremely accurate. The zoom ring works as smooth as silk and is very quick. There is absolutely no "looseness" in this lens. There is no ZOOM DRIFT! This stays set to any focal length, without drifting in or out. You can verify this by looking at my item pictures, number 5 & 6. The lens stays put at any focal length! This capability is very unusual for this model and it indicates that it has been used very little. The barrel, focusing ring, zoom ring, AF switch and hand grip surfaces are all in superb shape. There are no cracks, chips or dings at all. It is very, very clean and looks great. There are just a few very slight "rub marks" and other subtle signs of use on the barrel, but they are hard to find without very close inspection. The most noticeable flaw is a very small "rub" on the front side of the barrel, just to the left of where it says "ULTRASONIC". I used special lighting in item photo #2 to make this tiny flaw as visible as possible for your inspection. This flaw is purely "cosmetic", with no affect on the performance or durability of the lens. I didn't show up at all until I made an extra effort to capture it. Otherwise, the rest of the lens is nearly perfect.The AF/M (Auto Focus / Manual) switch looks like new and functions perfectly. The Manual Focus Ring turns very smoothly. The zoom grip looks like new and the zoom "ZOOMS" perfectly, it is very quick and smooth. Both the front and the rear glass is crystal clear, with no scratches, haze or fungus. There is very little dust dust inside. The distance scale window is crystal clear. All of the lettering and numbers inside the distance window and everywhere on the barrel are very bright, crisp, flawless and easy to read. The glass is absolutely PERFECT. There are no flaws, scratches "cleaning marks" or any imperfections at all. The interior of the lens is very clean, with no "haze" or fungus present, just a few tiny specks of dust, which is perfectly normal and will have absolutely no negative affect on any of your pictures at all.Image quality dramatically outperforms the other popular Canon consumer and middle grade lenses by a long shot! Sharpness and contrast are quite impressive throughout the entire zoom range. Distortions are not visible and flare is very well controlled. Pictures produced through this lens are sharp, “contrasty†and rich in color saturation. This model makes the slow EF 80-200mm MK II feel like a cheap plastic toy. If you want a great affordable lens for portraits, wildlife, candid shots and sports, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE. Note that when it is used on a Canon Digital Rebel XT, XTi, SXi, 300D, 40D, 30D, 20D or 10D, this is equivalent in "Field-of-View" to a a 112-336mm zoom lens. That's due to the 1.6 X "crop factor" magnification. That makes this a long, yet surprisingly compact telephoto lens. This is the ultimate "affordable" telephoto zoom for any Canon EOS Digital SLR.Look up the reviews (I have two convenient "links" below) You will find it to be a very highly respected lens among professional photographers and photo gear reviewers.
